Amblin producing a film based on Michael Crichton’s final novel Micro

Michael Crichton's final novel MICRO is getting the film treatment by way of Amblin Entertainment. Adapting the book has supposedly been a passion project for Steven f*cking Spielberg since he bought the book two years ago. Like JURASSIC PARK, Amblin hopes to launch a franchise with the film, and the company is currently negotiating with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES director Joachim Rønning to helm. 

Michael Crichton is, of course, the author of JURASSIC PARK, CONGO, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, and many, many other classic books. But I didn't need to tell you that. But did you know he was also a writer-director himself, helming the original WESTWORLD? Of course you knew that too. MICRO was unfinished when Crichton died in 2008, but was completed by author Richard Preston in 2011. It spent 20 weeks on the bestseller lists.

MICRO synopsis:

The novel is a high-concept thriller that follows a group of graduate students lured to Hawaii to work for a mysterious biotech company—only to find themselves miniaturized and cast out into the rain forest, with nothing but their scientific expertise and wits to protect them.

Sounds like HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS to me… Which, on a fun side note, was originally written by RE-ANIMATOR team Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna. MICRO is currently gearing up for a fall shoot with a script written by Darren Lemke, and with Frank Marshall producing.
