We are a little more than one week away from the release of Ridley Scott's new ALIEN prequel ALIEN: COVENANT. Our own Jake Dee gave the flick a glowing like the sun review tagged with an amazing 9/10 rating, and I bought my ticket that day.
Today we have a bit of news on the other ALIEN prequel PROMETHEUS.
Now I am a big fan of PROMETHEUS and I have little to zero issues with any parts of the film other than the dialogue and those few moments that we all know well and good by now are "f*cking stupid."
All the same, many people feel PROMETHEUS was a vast misstep in the ALIEN saga. And it turns out today, maybe, just maybe, Sir Ridley Scott feels the same.
Ridley Scott on PROMETHEUS:
… we discovered from it that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster] and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong’… The fans, in a funny kind of way – they’re not the final word – but they are the reflection of your doubts about something, and then you realize ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I was right’. I think that’s where it comes in. I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account.
Meh. I don't know if I agree with this criticism. Not what Scott is saying, but what he is talking about – i.e. the fans who wanted more xenomorph action. Sure, the xenomorphs were missed in PROMETHEUS but I don't think "xenomorph action" is what we find so fascinating about Scott's ALIEN films.
Hell, just look at the reactions to the piss-poor AVP flicks and you'll see that "xenomorph-action" alone does not a good film make.
ALIEN: COVENANT synopsis:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.
ALIEN: COVENANT stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, James Franco, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England and Benjamin Rigby.
ALIEN COVENANT hits theaters May 19th.
