Jordan Peele will not direct Akira, talks Get Out 2

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Universal Pictures recently decided to hold an ironic garden party in honor of Jordan Peele's GET OUT. Strange idea, right? I say it's totally fitting of the creepy paranoia flick.

Anyhow, at the garden party (pics below) not only did they serve the f*cking coolest hors d'oeuvre in the way of Allison Williams' crazy ass cereal ritual, but the filmmakers were also in attendance and talked a bit about GET OUT 2 and AKIRA.

Turns out neither flick is happening anytime soon. That sucks. I guess. Well, let me rephrase that, neither of these flicks seems to be happening anytime soon – with Jordan Peele's involvement.

GET OUT producer Sean McKittrick on GET OUT 2:

I hope we’re going to make one. I would love to. We’ve been joking and half-joking about sequels and prequels to GET OUT since the initial conversation over a pitch of GET OUT.”

Jason Blum on GET OUT 2:

We’ve managed to do sequels to almost every one of the hits that we’ve had, and this is the first movie where I just cannot imagine what the sequel would be. So if Jordan came up with an idea of what he wanted to do as a sequel to the movie, of course we would do it… but I’m not encouraging him to do that, I and I really can’t conceive of what it would be.

I don’t think it’s the kind of movie where you push Jordan to come up with another one,” he went on. “If it organically happens, it happens, but I don’t think anything good would come of forcing it to happen… and I don’t think that’s always the case. There are plenty of directors where I’m like, ‘Dude, you’ve gotta make one.’”

And so what does Jordan Peele himself have to say on GET OUT 2:

Look, I feel like there’s much more depth to the world [of GET OUT],” Peele said. “I would only deliver the audience a sequel if I felt like I was going to beat the original. So you know, I’m on the case. I’m on the case.”

Right on. Good to know, Jordan Peele. What about his involvement on AKIRA? Is that still happening?? Turns out, nope.

Jordan Peele on AKIRA:

I think [I could do it] if the story justifies it,” Peele said. “AKIRA is one of my favorite movies, and I think obviously the story justifies as big a budget as you can possibly dream of. But the real question for me is: Do I want to do pre-existing material, or do I want to do original content? At the end of the day, I want to do original stuff.”

Again, this news is too bad. Or, it's a good thing depending on how you look at it. Sure, GET OUT doesn't need a sequel, but I'd sure as hell take another one with Peele back at the helm. Also, AKIRA might not be the best idea, but who knows what Peele could do with that property as well.

I'm just too optimistic sometimes. Forgive me.

Anyhow, if you haven't checked out Jordan Peele's GET OUT yet, you don't read this site so you aren't reading this either, but all the same, pre-order GET OUT on Blu-ray tonight and watch it asap! There just had to get (that) out.
