Sony is rebooting the GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO franchise with the release of THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB on November 9th, and a trailer has now been released to give an early look at EVIL DEAD 2013 / DON’T BREATHE director Fede Alvarez’s take on the literary world that was created by author Stieg Larsson and continued by David Lagercrantz.
Written by Steven Knight, Alvarez, and Jay Basu from a novel by Lagercrantz, this chapter in the Lisbeth Salander saga has the following synopsis:
She is the girl with the dragon tattoo — a genius hacker and uncompromising misfit. He is a crusading journalist whose championing of the truth often brings him to the brink of prosecution.
Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker — a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…
Claire Foy takes over the role of Salander in this film and is joined in the cast by Lakeith Stanfield, Claes Bang, Sylvia Hoeks, Cameron Britton, Andreja Pejić, and Vickey Krieps, with Sverrir Gudnason as Mikael Blomquist.
The trailer, embedded below, mostly consists of a look at one scene from the film, giving us a good idea of how Foy will be playing Salander, following in the footsteps of Noomi Rapace (who starred in Swedish adaptations of Larsson’s initial trilogy of novels) and Rooney Mara (who starred in David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO).
I was a big fan of Fincher’s film and desperately wanted to see Mara return as Salander in sequels. THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB isn’t the continuation of the franchise that I wanted, but it looks like it could be an interesting thriller.
We’ll find out how well it all works when the film is released in five months.
