AITH teams with Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn for Terror Tuesdays lineup

Something very cool is set to happen at the Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn next month, as the films scheduled to be screened as part of the theatre's Terror Tuesday series in July are being co-presented by Arrow in the Head. Our own Eric Walkuski programmed the lineup, the theme being "Summer of '88" – celebrating the genre classics that were released during the sweaty summer months thirty years ago.

Eric had this to say about the "Summer of '88" films: 

The summer of '88 delivered the kinds of horror movies that would eventually lead to the creation of Arrow in the Head. Call them schlock, call them low-brow, call them guilty pleasures; they're movies we horror fanatics have watched to death. And we're not about to stop at death!"

The movies he picked out are: 

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD
Tuesday, July 3rd, 9:30PM
Dir. John Carl Buechler
Starring: Kane Hodder, Lar Park-Lincoln, Terry Kiser

This movie has a great title. But it’s a little vague. It’s like saying FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: BLOODY KNIFE. A more fitting title would be FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: CARRIE WHITE GOES TO THERAPY BECAUSE OF HER TELEKINESIS WHILE JASON WALKS AROUND AND KILLS PEOPLE AND THEN JASON FIGHTS CARRIE AT THE END. See? That title is so good! Now you’re stoked to see this movie!! And that’s before we even told you that it was directed by goop-master John Carl Beuchler. Or that Bernie from WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S stars as a doctor who loses his shit every five minutes. Or that this movie finds Jason ripping apart the most righteous group of teen party animals since FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER.

PHANTASM II

Almost a full decade after shocking and befuddling audiences with cerebral nightmare epic PHANTASM, writer/director Don Coscarelli unleashed this infinitely more amped-up braindamager. The elderly-but-omnipotent Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) has returned to devour entire towns, transforming select victims into dwarven fiends to aid in his latent enslavement of the Earth. Mankind’s only hope lies with a bald ice cream vendor and a blow-dried goof from an insane asylum. More gore, more goop and more chainsaw-wielding, automobile-crushing, house-exploding action than we’ll see in another fright film until Hollywood wises the hell up. No worries if you’re new to the series: a 30-second recap knocks things into place for the following 96 minutes of full-tilt transdimensional antihuman dementia!

THE BLOB (1988)

Bigger. Better. BLOBBIER! When ooze-drenched remakes of THE THING and THE FLY brought new life to old horrors in the mid 1980s, it was only a matter of time before the ante was upped. Cue director Chuck Russell and scripter Frank Darabont, the team behind A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS. Also cue the unstoppable human-ingestion machine known as The Blob!! Exchanging the quaint science of the original 1950s movie for flesh-ripping mayhem, THE BLOB is a showcase for hallucinogenic goop ‘n’ slime effects, Shawnee Smith as a tough-as-nails Blob-buster, and a gravity-defying mullet from Kevin Dillon.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER

Starring: Andras Jones, Lisa Wilcox, Robert Englund

​Where does a franchise go after delivering one of the greatest rampagers in the history of horror sequels? We're not sure. But it has something to do with nunchucks, Freddy Krueger in drag, and a demonic dog named "Jason" who pisses a stream of fire onto a pile of dirt. Hooray! THE DREAM MASTER captures Freddy's transformation from a vile child-torturer to a cuddly stand-up comic. This movie is a volcanic fun-bomb of pink and green neon, ridiculous dialogue, and jaw-dropping special effects. It feels like psychedelic wildman José Mojica Marins aka Coffin Joe commandeered the MTV Studios for twenty-four hours. But instead of following his own descent into madness, he made a Freddy movie. Embrace the Freddy shark, Freddy kung-fu, and FREDDY PIZZA!!

WAXWORK

Prepare your fists for ultimate pumps! If you went to a WWF Royal Rumble at John Hughes's house and the participants were monsters instead of wrestlers, you'd have a good time. But you wouldn't have a GREAT time. Because you wouldn't be watching WAXWORK. Taking the "genre-pastiche-as-unstoppable-entertainment" baton from Joe Dante and John Landis, WAXWORK is a mutant amalgam of ST. ELMO'S FIRE, THE MONSTER SQUAD, and every twelve-year-old horror kid's wildest dreams. When a mysterious wax museum opens in town, a group of rich teenage turds led by Zack Galligan (GREMLINS!) and Deborah Foreman (VALLEY GIRL!) decide to check it out. But holy geez! Some satanic hocus-pocus turns un-reality to reality as the wax scenes come to life aka THE MONSTERS ARE LOOSE!

I want to go see every one of those. Note that all of these films will be presented in 35mm, which makes this chance to see them projected on the big screen all the more awesome.

In addition to the Terror Tuesday lineup, the Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn has also announced July's Weird Wednesday movies: INVASION U.S.A., DOG DAY, BMX BANDITS, and BIG MEAT EATER.
