Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, a horror comedy mockumentary about a group of vampires in New Zealand, became an instant cult hit when it was released in 2015. Next year, we'll get to see if FX can find success with a What We Do in the Shadows television series that follows a different group of vampires who have been residing on Staten Island for a long time.
Clement and Waititi serve as executive producers on the series alongside Paul Simms, Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, and Garrett Basch. The show centers on
three vampires who live together: Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) — the former two are husband and wife. Also living with them is a fourth vampire named Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), who’s an “energy vampire.” Instead of blood, he sucks the energy out of his victims by boring them to death with mundane anecdotes and bad jokes. The office is his feeding ground, but his powers also work on his vampire roomies.
Staying with the vampires is their "sweet but fumbling" familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), who hopes to become a vampire himself someday.
Interactions between Guillermo and his master Laszlo are the focus of the first two of the three promos FX has released for What We Do in the Shadows. The other promo introduces Nadja and Nandor. They're very quick, but they give an idea of the goofy sort of fun the show will have to offer.
The network hasn't announced a specific premiere date yet, but the show is expected to start airing sometime in spring 2019.
