When Zooey Deschanel was first announced to be portraying Janis Joplin in director Penelope Spheeris’ biopic GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JANIS last September, things were looking sunny side up with production ready to roll in November. Then, as it tends to happen with famous singers’ biopics, the proverbial shit essentially happened, plunging the film into the devastating vortex of production hell. As Deschanel explains it, “…I don’t know when we’re going to start shooting. We were supposed to shoot in November, but it’s one of these things [that] seems like it’s been hard to get all the money and the rights in place. There are all kinds of different rights. You need the rights to the song, and life rights. There’s a lot of legal stuff that goes into playing a real person.” Read what else Deschanel had to say about the film HERE.
