Kevin Smith fans have been waiting long and been waiting hard for something completely different genre-wise, from their bearded and bespectacled hero. Smith is more in touch with his fans than probably any other director out there, so the promises have been plentiful, from his rumored Green Lantern project to his much talked-about horror film.
Well the chaps over at Rotten Tomatoes UK had the chance to speak to Smith, and not only is the horror project on its way, but it has a title too, RED STATE. And yes, that’s a deliberate political reference on K-Smi’s part, as the film is inspired by the extreme Christian fundamentalism rearing its head in today’s America.
Smith says the movie isn’t a straight-up horror movie. He says in the interview: “It’s weird because for a few months I’ve been saying ‘horror movie’ and technically it is, but it’s also not a very traditional horror movie in the sense that people have been asking me, ‘Is it a slasher movie? Is it like the Japanese horror flicks?’ It’d be much easier to just show it to them when I’m done and be like, ‘This is what I meant.'”
Makes sense, doesn’t it? We’d all be an ignorant bunch of movie fans to expect a ‘regular’ horror movie from Smith. In the interview he mentions using one of them intense evangelical preachers as his villain. Good call, because those dudes are truly more terrifying than some punk in a William Shatner mask.
