It’s Asian action film remake time again, everybody! In this installment, one time BATMAN franchise destroying director Joel Schumacher is in talks to direct a remake of the Hong Kong actioner BREAKING NEWS. Written by Alex de Rakoff, the story centers on a police detective who turns a stakeout into a breaking news event. That particular act is precipitated by the media broadcasting a tape of a police battalion getting their asses handed to them by five bank robbers. When the aforementioned detective discovers the location of the robbers’ hideout, rather than stake the place out and work up a strategy to incarcerate these thugs, he turns it into a media circus. The original had the Johnnie To directorial seal of approval so hopefully Schumacher’s got some tricks up his sleeve to enhance the apparent greatness of To’s film.
