A 2008 film that’s charting sky-high on Ben Barna’s ‘must-see chart’ is Spike Jonze’s adaptation of the classic Maurice Sendak children’s book WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. The screenplay was written by hipper-than-thou writer Dave Eggers, and features voice work from Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker and Lauren Ambrose. We’ve been treated to very little of the film so far except for this picture. It was obtuse enough to keep my curiosity strong, but revealed enough to give an idea of the film’s aesthetic. Now we have a second picture that reminds me how transcendental this film can be. It’s sublime, mystical and it gets me wet. Also, those big, huggable Wild Things look f*cking adorable. Spike Jonze (ADAPTATION) has long been one of Hollywood’s true visionaries, but we tend to forget it since he makes so few films. WILD THINGS drops on the too-distant date of October 3rd.
