Were you excited to see Silver Surfer come to the big screen? However, were you deeply saddened that he had to be in a movie like FANTASTIC FOUR 2?
You are not alone.
J. Michael Straczynski, writer of all things awesome, was asked if his Surfer draft was dead, “What happened was when FF2 didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a Silver Surfer movie. The script that I wrote picked up right where FF2 left off. So if they do a Silver Surfer film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.” Honestly, they should have done a solo Surfer from the start. There’s enough content there for Norrin Radd to get his own film. It really makes me angry because it’s an amazing character. There are so many complexities and emotions that get thrown into the mix.
FF2 was definitely a family oriented movie, but was Straczynski’s draft for the kiddos? “It was definitely adult fare. I wanted to tell the origin of the Surfer and get into that whole thing.” Just as it should have been. I say, start the shit over and let Straczynski do his thing. He’s an excellent comic writer as well. He did my favorite Surfer series, Requiem. It was actually meant to coincide with FF2.
After watching FF2, I just felt awful. Bringing Silver Surfer in was supposed to make the movie epic, at least that’s how I felt about it. Anyway, I’ll stop bitching. Hopefully the draft Straczynski did will get a fair chance at some point.
