Mark Ruffalo will be the Hulk in the Avengers!

UPDATE – Deadline claims the deal is done for Ruffalo to join AVENGERS, and that you’ll get the official announcement at the Saturday Comic Con panel from Marvel!

7.14.10: After a few days of controversy between Marvel and Ed Norton’s camp over whether or not he’d come back as Bruce Banner, Norton finally called it quits with a statement expressing his regret. But not one to dwell on spilled milk, the studio has almost instantaneously moved on, and Deadline reports they’re courting a new actor.

Mark Ruffalo is said to be in late-stage talks to play Bruce Banner in THE AVENGERS, fresh off Scorcese’s SHUTTER ISLAND and an acclaimed performance in THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT.

He would seem to be a pretty unlikely choice for the role, as “Mark Ruffalo, action star” doesn’t seem quite right, but he brings real dramatic talent with him as Norton would have, but he probably won’t be as much of a dick during filming.

Granted, a lot of his scenes will be filled by a screaming, massive, green version of himself, but surely Banner will play a pivotal part in the film during some of the less intense moments.

What do you think of Ruffalo in the role? The right choice or is this a big miss?
