Not movie news per se, but it’s always sad when a talented young actor passes away. Andy Whitfield was the star of Spartacus: Blood and Sand on Starz until he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma 18 months ago. Sadly he lost that battle today at the age of 39.
The show was put on hiatus after his diagnosis, and the creators went ahead with a prequel series without him. Finally, his role was recast for the following season, but word had it that his cancer had gone into remission and he was started to recover. But apparently further complications arose, and Whitfield passed away in Syndney this weekend.
He is survived by his wife who called him a “beautiful young warrior” who died on a “sunny Sydney morning” in the “arms of his loving wife.”
Truly a loss for the acting community, and I personally loved Whitfield’s work on Spartacus and had hoped he would someday be able to return to the show. RIP Andy.
