Star Trek 2 won’t be shot in 3D after all, but possibly IMAX

There were some rumors back in November that JJ Abrams would be shooting STAR TREK 2 in 3D but the director has taken to the internet to debunk those rumors and put an end to the 2D/3D controversy.

Abrams told MTV that the film will not be shot in 3D but will instead use the old post-conversion process that has come under scrutiny. “We’ll do a good high-end conversion like the HARRY POTTER movie,” Abrams says. Because the release date is over a year away, Abrams believes they’ll have enough time to do it right because, “if you rush it, it never looks good.”

But that’s not all Abrams had to say when it comes to shooting STAR TREK 2. He was asked about the suddenly popular IMAX and Abrams said, “I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I’m a huge fan.” Strange (or perhaps not so strange) that Abrams didn’t have that same enthusiasm for the 3D format.

Personally, I think the IMAX format is the new wave while 3D gets put on the backburner and would love to see Abrams join guys like Brad Bird and Chris Nolan in shooting big sequences using the IMAX cameras and leaving the 3D on the side.
