Joss Whedon wants Avengers 2 to be “smaller”

According to Joss Whedon, it isn’t the size that counts, especially with the probable sequel to THE AVENGERS.  He wants the hypothetical follow up to be “smaller, more personal, more painful.”

“I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight – and ultimately, what makes them awesome,” he explained. “I go to these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches.”

The prospect of spending more time learning about each character’s quirks and weaknesses will definitely make for a better film experience, but can there possibly be enough screen time for Black Widow to deal with her daddy issues or Tony Stark to drink himself into oblivion?

I have faith in Whedon’s ability to bring THE AVENGERS to the big screen.  The trailers have given me nothing but positive vibes on the film, but I have the same apprehensions that he has mentioned.  Just like the Schumacher BATMAN films collapsed under too many villains, it is entirely possible that this movie may feel like a Cliff’s Notes version of an actual story.  Most comic book arcs take place over several monthly releases and not just a single contained issue.

I guess all that we can do at this point is cross our fingers and wait for May 4th to roll around to see what needs fixing.
