What will you be watching this weekend? (August 31)

Watchoo Watchin'?!

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

Lawless PosterIt’s looking like some Great Depression era moonshine and Marvel will own my cinematic weekend and I’m totally cool with that!

I’ve dug director John Hillcoat’s work for some time now and I’m very excited to see him re-team with Guy Pearce (THE PROPOSITION) this weekend along with Shia LeBeouf, Gary Oldman and the always badass Tom Hardy with the release of LAWLESS. The rich and rebellious history of ‘shine running has always had a place in my heart and it looks like LAWLESS has the grit, drama and gunplay to end the Summer season right. Be sure to check out our official LAWLESS review right over yonder.

THE AVENGERS just don’t have any quit in them! Even though they thoroughly HULKSMASHED the box-office earlier this Summer this weekend is seeing the Joss Whedon flick have a 1,700 screen resurgence. I’m totally up for catching Cap and the crew one last time on the big screen and there’s some speculation on a potentially new post-credit sequence (I’m hoping for an IRON MAN 3 trailer). I think this will make an even six times I’ve seen THE AVENGERS in theaters … yeah, I kind of dug it.

ON TELEVISION…

The one who knocks“Say my name!”

Just when sh*t was about to get real this Sunday marks the mid-season finale of BREAKING BAD with the rest of the the fifth and final season to air sometime in 2013. I know, this hiatus is going to suck. I take solace in this harsh fact not only because I have to but because that means I will have time to revisit the entire series and be completely ready to fully enjoy the show’s conclusion come next year. Then I’ll have to quit BREAKING BAD cold-turkey … but I don’t want to think about that right now because it won’t be pretty.

Luckily for me the HELL ON WHEELS train will keep on rolling without any delays. Were a few episodes into the second season now and all kinds of hell is about to break loose. Maybe, just maybe HELL ON WHEELS will fill my Sunday night void now that THE NEWSROOM and BREAKING BAD will be missing.

Maybe … but if not at least I have new season of DEXTER starting later this month to look forward too!

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

QuadropheniaThere’s not too much that I’m looking forward to on the homefront this weekend and since I barely even acknowledge the existence of a movie based on BATTLESHIP it looks like I’m going to have to dig deeper …

I love The Who, always have and always will and when I heard that The Criterion Collection would be bringing their 1979 classic rock opera QUADROPHENIA to DVD and Blu-ray my head just about exploded. QUADROPHENIA is naturally set to the kickass tunes of The Who album of the same name which narrates the clash of two distinctive English youths subcultures; the “Mods” who listen to American pop and soul and the “Rockers” who listen to American rock’n’roll. The fact that a young Sting makes his actorial debut is just icing on cake.

How about a foreign flick? HEADHUNTERS, a new thriller out of Norway, hit our Blu-ray and DVD shelves earlier this week and the plot has some promise; a charming high-class art thief breaks into a former mercenary’s home to steal an extremely valuable painting but stumbles onto something else that makes him a target. HEADHUNTERS cleaned up in European box-offices and I can’t wait to see if it lives up to the international hype.
