Anne Hathaway may go from Les Miz to fighting sentient machines in Spielberg’s Robopocalypse

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Anne Hathaway is quite the actress. In the course of the last twelve months, she has gone from playing Catwoman in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES to Fantine in Tom Hooper’s LES MISERABLES. She even hosted SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE the other night. Hathaway is as talented as she is sexy.

Unless things change drastically, it looks like her next project will be for Steven Spielberg. Hathaway told Empire that is is officially going to star in ROBOPOCALYPSE. She told the magazine “If ROBOPOCALYPSE happens I will be in it and I believe it’s quite real, though you never want to hang your hat on anything.”

If it happens? If? I knew the project was taking a long time to develop, but with the casting news of Ben Wishaw and, possibly, of Chris Hemsworth, I assumed it was a go. Apparently there are still a lot of factors to consider. Here I was thinking that the name Steven Spielberg would make a movie a lock for any studio, but apparently not.

Hathaway added “Whenever I’m taking time off, I always joke to my team that I’m on vacation unless Steven Spielberg calls. And I was on vacation and Spielberg called. So I was like, ‘OK, put my money where my mouth is’.”

Plot: In the near future, an increasingly robot-reliant society faces extinction after a computer scientist accidentally unleashes a sentient artificial intelligence named Archos. After failed attempts at making a non-homocidal artificial intelligence, the safeguards in a computer science lab are compromised. Archos, a supremely intelligent AI, becomes self-aware and immediately starts planning the decimation of human civilization in an attempt to preserve Earth’s biodiversity. After infecting all penetrable networked electronic devices (cars, airplanes, elevators, robots, etc.) with a “precursor virus”, Archos begins planning a systematic attack on the human race.

I hope ROBOPOCALYPSE does not differ from the source material too much (ahem, WORLD WAR Z…) but I am open to adding new characters if it means gaining a quality actress like Hathaway.

Assuming the project moves forward as planned, ROBOPOCALYPSE will open in theaters on April 25, 2014.
