Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.
So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…
IN THEATERS…
This weekend prepare yourself for Twihard infestations as the second and final half of Twilight’s BREAKING DAWN PART 2 hits screens, thankfully there are several solid options for us brave (or foolish) enough to go to our local cineplexes anyway.
LINCOLN has so much going for it that it’s almost ridiculous; Spielberg? Check. The great Daniel Day-Lewis going full Abe? Yup! Tommy Lee Jones sporting a wig that would make Nic Cage jealous? You bet your America lovin’ butt! Though speaking honestly the trailers for this flick haven’t done a whole lot to get me excited for LINCOLN. But that is hardly consequential as the ridiculous talent involved and the brilliance in casting DDL as the 16th Prez will have my butt in a theater seat regardless. Be sure to check out our official LINCOLN review right here!
It looks like Twilight is taking up four screens out of ten at my local theater … man, that’s lame. So while LINCOLN will be the only new release available to me this week that just means I’ll have the opportunity to catch up with Robert Zemeckis’ return to live-action with FLIGHT. I’ve heard some pretty intriguing things about this Denzel Washington flick, mostly that it’s a lot darker than most anticipated, and I’m very excited to see Zemeckis cut loose from the CGI lovefest he’s been on for over a decade.
Or maybe I’ll just catch my third SKYFALL screening … don’t judge me! It’s a really, really great movie.

ON TELEVISION…
Love can make things complicated and seeing how complicated Dexter Morgan’s life already is what with balancing being a single parent, working for the police, staying on good terms with his sister and moonlighting as a serial killer it seems to me the last thing he needs in his life is a new woman. But that’s what’s happening in DEXTER and when his new squeeze is played by the hot and magnetic Yvonne Strahovski I guess I can let it slide. Seriously, you can’t blame Dex for being interested in this.
Jeremy Renner strikes me as a funny guy that never has really had a chance to flex his comedic muscle, that may change with HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS hits theaters (I still don’t know what to make of that movie) but it makes the fact that he’s hosting SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE this weekend pretty cool. I have no idea what to expect from Renner but I get the feeling it’s not going to be an episode I want to miss.
Speaking of episodes I’m not wanting to miss THE WALKING DEAD has really upped it’s game in the past couple of weeks and I’m really liking the momentum and if this keeps up it may turn into the best season yet. I’m starting to think that if I were in a zombie apocalypse situation I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near Rick Grimes, that dude seems to have had nothing but bad luck since episode one. And now with The Govener starting to throw his clout around it’s only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose in Woodbury too and it’s not just going to be the zombies that need killin’.
ON DVD & BLU-RAY…
“The best of them won’t come for money; they’ll come for me.”
It’s about flippin’ time LAWRENCE OF ARABIA was released on Blu-ray! If there was ever a film that deserved the hidef treatment it’s David Lean’s sweeping epic … it’s going to be beautiful. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA was actually announced for Blu-ray almost four years ago by Sony only to be delayed so it could get a proper restoration. I’m seriously considering going for broke and picking up 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition box set, if there is one movie I’d be willing to pay handsomely for it is this one.
If you don’t like Pixar movies then I’ve got bad news; you may be heartless. This week both BRAVE and THE PIXAR SHORT FILMS COLLECTION 2 hit DVD and Blu-ray shelves. I’ll probably pick up BRAVE first but I’ve always enjoyed the Pixar shorts that play before the features as well and this second volume includes twelve of them including the TOY STORY characters in “Hawaiian Vacation” and my personal favorite and Oscar nominated “Day and Night“.
Strange things are afoot in the Blu-ray aisle … because BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE just made the most triumphant jump to hidef! I love this movie like Genghis Khan likes metal baseball bats, Napoleon loves waterslides, Joan of Arc loves aerobic workouts, Socrates loves San Dimas and Abraham Lincoln loves to party. I’m pretty excited at the prospect of new Bill & Ted flick on the way but for my money nothing will top the original time traveling adventure of Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Ted “Theodore” Logan.
