Updated: “Amazon” scribe Allan Heinberg has revealed via Twitter that the name “Iris” was in fact merely a code name so as to not draw attention to the actual role being cast. Diana Prince is present and accounted for and will be the alter ego name for Wonder Woman after all.
Last reported about back in September, “Amazon” is the latest in The CW’s seeming attempt to cement its place as the go-to network for DC comics on television, with a casting search having begun for the small screen’s second attempt in recent years to tackle the character of Wonder Woman, aka Diana Prince.
Except, in this case, her name is Iris.
Which is a bit strange, until you realize that the main rendition of Wonder Woman we all know has probably been locked down for the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. Should the series go beyond its expected pilot pickup and JUSTICE LEAGUE actually come together, it’ll certainly be interesting to have two different iterations of the character running around in the public entertainment consciousness. The same thing happened before with SUPERMAN RETURNS and “Smallville”, so the situation is not exactly unprecedented. That doesn’t make it less strange though.
The script is currently being written while a lead actress is found, so if you live in LA and are taller than 5’8″ then I’d have your agent get a hold of the casting director pronto. Unless of course you don’t want to be Wonder Woman. But if you do, or you’re not an actress above 5’8″ in height but are curious nonetheless, here’s the character description for Iris: “She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.”
Well Wonder Woman fans? What do you think about the creative direction being taken by The CW and “Amazon”?
WWII Wonder Woman is… uhm… is definitely a good way to go.
