We haven’t heard much in the way of anything regarding Fox’s reboot of FANTASTIC FOUR since they locked down director Josh Trank (CHRONICLE) Josh Trank officially directing The Fantastic Four” href=”../movie-news/fox-officially-sets-chronicle-director-josh-trank-on-fantastic-four-joe-cornish-on-rust-and-david-slade-now-off-daredevil-reboot” target=”_blank”>back in the summer. But now two elements regarding the project have been announced, a title and a release date, the reveal of which seems to indicate that production is well on track. Now titled THE FANTASTIC FOUR, you can expect Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm to return to cinemas on March 6th, 2015.
What I’m most curious about at this stage, even more so than casting, is the working relationship between Fox and Trank – are they going to let him do his own thing insofar as the directing goes, or are they going to try and have him shoehorn in elements of the found footage style that dominated CHRONICLE? And more importantly, would you want them to? Or was it enough for one superhero flick, and you’d rather have a more straightforward filmmaking style for THE FANTASTIC FOUR?
And while there are no announced plans at this time to release THE FANTASTIC FOUR in 3D (be it filmed or post-converted), it would not be all that surprising considering Fox’s announcement that four of its upcoming releases will receive the 3D treatment. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, THE WOLVERINE, and PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS. As the last two have already wrapped, their 3D can only come via post-conversion – the first two have yet to film, and so technically it’s possible for them to actually be shot in 3D. I would imagine it’s merely a matter of cost weighed against the director’s comfort level, and that we’ll know soon enough the route which Matt Reeves (DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) and Bryan Singer (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) elect to take.
