Kristen Stewart, hot off her franchise-drenched career, is stepping into some more creative material, along with Elizabeth Banks, Susan Sarandon, and Jim Sturgess, in THE BIG SHOE, a new erotic comedy from director Steven Shainberg. Shainberg, you may recall, is the director of the dark erotic indie SECRETARY, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader, which has become a cult classic of sorts. What you may not recall is Shainberg’s brilliantly underrated FUR: A PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS, the 2006 film starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. It’s an odd, beautifully shot and acted film that really stuck with me and was all but glossed over when it was released.
Shainberg has said that THE BIG SHOE will be similar in theme to SECRETARY, tapping into the erotic fetishism and dark comedy that made it so endearing. It’s obvious that Shainberg has a fetish for, uh, fetish material and I’m down with that. The last thing I need to see is another cookie-cutter romcom starring Jessica Biel and/or Josh Duhamel. I think this is a great venue for Stewart as well, who I think is a talented actress in need of some stronger material. Perhaps this will be it.
Here’s the description (from Deadline):
Sturgess plays a gifted shoe designer forced to break free from a family who wants to turn his designs into mass-produced knock-offs. The family hires psychotherapist Mary Kay (Banks) and muse Delphi (Stewart) to lure him back to work. Sarandon will play Sturgess’ mom.
THE BIG SHOE is currently in pre-production with no set release date.
