Quentin Tarantino, you could argue, is at the top of the film mountain right now. Not only have his last two films INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS and DJANGO UNCHAINED been critically acclaimed, but they have also pulled in tons of money. It’s double impressive for DJANGO UNCHAINED considering westerns don’t generally do as well overseas and it just goes to show you the type of clout he carries.
While answering questions at a press conference for BAFTA winners Quentin Tarantino confirmed that he would be interested in doing another film to finish his “rewritten history” trilogy.
From Empire: “This [rewritten history theme] begs a trilogy, it begs to have a third movie on this theme. I haven’t decided about what yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised…”
Now Quentin Tarantino has been guilty more than once of talking up a project that never sees the light of day (Vega brothers movie, KILL BILL animated prequel…didn’t he want to do a porn at one point or something?), but I think we can take this comment a little more seriously. He’s at the top of his game and a lot of that credit is due to his past two films.
I know there are people out there that have not cared for his “rewritten history” films for whatever reasons. But to me I think these movies have given Quentin Tarantino the opportunity to grow as a filmmaker. We all love PULP FICTION and RESERVOIR DOGS, and all of his films feel like a “Tarantino Flick” but would you really want him to be making the same thing over and over? Isn’t that why Woody Allen or Wes Anderson tend to get shit? (Note: This is not necessarily MY opinion as I enjoy both directors; just one I’ve heard from others.) It’s like when a band slightly changes its sound and then fans bitch because it doesn’t sound like “their old stuff.”
At this point Quentin Tarantino can do whatever he wants. Not that he couldn’t before but it certainly helps when your films are pulling in over $100 million. It’ll be real interesting to see what time period he may cover next and hopefully we’ll get more information as soon as possible.
