King of Summer’s Nick Robinson joins Jurassic World while Dwayne Johnson boards earthquake epic San Andreas 3D

Two big projects are adding to their casts in very different ways. One has gained an action star while another has found a teen actor making the leap from indie to major studio fare. Both projects are interesting and so are these casting choices.

First up is Nick Robinson joining Colin Trevorrow‘s JURASSIC WORLD as the older brother to Ty Simpkins‘ character. While there are rumors that Bryce Dallas Howard is also joining the cast, all news about the film are firmly saying the cast will be an ensemble. Having two kids at the forefront of the story is reminiscent of the original JURASSIC PARK. Hopefully they are taking this sequel in an original direction while keeping Steven Spielberg‘s classic as the template.

Robinson’s work in KINGS OF SUMMER was good, much better than his role on the awful ABC Family sitcom MELISSA AND JOEY. He definitely has the chops for a bigger role and hopefully is given the opportunity here. Without much detail as to what JURASSIC WORLD will be about, we can only speculate.

JURASSIC WORLD is slated for a June 12, 2015 release.

The other big casting news is that Dwayne Johnson is joining Brad Peyton‘s SAN ANDREAS 3D. The earthquake movie will reunite the pair who also worked together on JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. That sequel was much better than it deserved to be and had a cartoonish quality to it. It was also a lot of fun.

New Line is aiming to make a film that is Roland Emmerich in scope but also family friendly, based on the synopsis:

The script is set after a devastating earthquake hits California and centers on a rugged rescue-helicopter pilot (Johnson) making a perilous trip across the state to rescue his estranged daughter.

While the idea of Johnson in a disaster movie is enticing, the family friendly leanings worries me. The man who was The Rock has always been better when he isn’t making movies like TOOTH FAIRY or THE GAME PLAN. I want my Dwayne Johnson movies to be action flicks like THE RUNDOWN or adult fare like PAIN AND GAIN.

Dwayne Johnson will likely jump into production on SAN ANDREAS 3D once he finishes filming HERCULES: THE THRACIAN WARS. SAN ANDREAS 3D is aiming for a 2015 release.
