Director Jon Chu recently made a comment about Channing Tatum possibly being back for a sequel to G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, and in an interview with ComingSoon, he has responded to the rumor he accidently started. Like the last time the director talked about a third G.I. JOE movie, there is a spoiler below that some of you may want to skip. Just a heads up.
Jon Chu was asked about Duke returning for the next film, and Chu said things escalated quickly after making a comment about the character coming back from the dead.
It all gets carried away again. They asked me about Channing and I don't know. You never know in these movies, and that's all I said, and suddenly it became "Channing Tatum might be back." To me, every possibility is open and we're writing the script right now and we're figuring everything out. It's an extremely low possibility when you kill somebody like that, it's pretty much it, but you never know with "G.I. Joe." We did that with Storm Shadow, too.
So Chu is pretty much saying the same thing he did last time: there's a small chance Duke will return, however it's not set in stone. Jon Chu was also asked if bigger names will be joining the next movie, like how Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson were added to G.I. JOE: RETALIATION.
Yeah. I'm excited to bring in new characters and fun things beyond Bruce and Dwayne that we're working on and some great villains, but we're forming those ideas now. I'm really excited – it's going to be a whole ‘nother level.
It sounds like Jon Chu is still trying to figure out what to do with the next sequel, but does say filming should start sometime in 2014.
I think we're going to be shooting next year. We're pretty motivated to get that up.
I thought the last film was only slightly better than G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, but I'm not against another sequel either. All I ask for is a fun G.I. JOE movie, and hopefully Jon Chu will deliver just that with the next film in the series.
