Yesterday’s news of Michael Douglas being cast in ANT-MAN as Hank Pym was a big surprise and met with a predominantly positive response. Douglas’ casting matches with director Edgar Wright’s original vision to have two protagonists, that being Hank Pym and Scott Lang, the second ANT-MAN, who will seemingly be portrayed by Paul Rudd. Talking to Reuters, Douglas said that doing a Marvel project was something he was keen to do.
“I’ve been dying to do a Marvel picture for so long. The script is really fun, the director is really good. Dylan (the actor’s 13-year-old son) will love it. He’ll have a picture he can see.”
Douglas, who just took home a Golden Globe for his performance as Liberace in director Stephen Soderberg’s BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, elaborated on his involvment with the project, saying:
“Sometimes – like (when) they didn’t see you for Liberace – you’ve got to shake them up a little bit and have some fun.”
Personally, I think this is awesome casting. With Robert Redford adding his refined status to this year’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and now Douglas on ANT-MAN it’s nice to see the veteran actors join in the fun of the leading genre in Hollywood. And why shouldn’t they? These are the guys that have rolled with every other popular genre, so it makes sense that they would have their day in court with the comic book genre as well. I’m intrigued as shit to see Douglas and Rudd play off one another under Wright’s direction and although there are a lot of skeptics on the inclusion of ANT-MAN in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think we’ve forgotten the lesson of IRON MAN, who was hardly a household name until his first big-screen adventure.
ANT-MAN hits theaters on July 31, 2015.
