Michael Pitt and Britt Marling investigate fate in the trailer for I Origins

Two years ago, director Mike Cahill and screenwriter/star Britt Marling turned in a unique indie science fiction movie called ANOTHER EARTH. Released around the same time as Lars Von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA, the contemplative drama received pretty good reviews and several awards at the Sundance Film Festival. It also signaled a strong and distinct filmmaking voice. Now, we get to see what they have next.

I ORIGINS follows another tale of science and faith mixed in such a way that makes you truly ponder the questions posed in the film. Cahill wrote I ORIGINS himself, but Marling appears in a supporting role. This time, the lead is BOARDWALK EMPIRE alum Michael Pitt as a scientist on an existential quest.

I Origins follows a molecular biologist whose study of the human eye points to evidence with far reaching implications about our scientific and spiritual beliefs.

Some may look at this trailer and think it looks pompous or overindulgent. I love these indie films with profound messages at their core. It is these types of films that you can discuss for hours and hours afterwards and still barely scratch the surface of what it all means.

I ORIGINS also stars Astrid Bergés-Frisbey, Steven Yeun, Archie Panjabi, and William Mapother and is due for release from Fox Searchlight on July 18, 2014.
