John Krasinski, the former star of THE OFFICE, has yet to explode on the big screen despite several rumors linking him to potential parts in movies as big as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. But, Krasinski has been content to work on projects like his directorial debut, BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN, and co-writing the film PROMISED LAND alongside Matt Damon. Now, Krasinski has lined up his next project, THE HOLLARS.
Based on a script from James C. Strouse, THE HOLLARS will co-star Anna Kendrick, Margo Martindale, and Richard Jenkins. The film is described as a cross between STEEL MAGNOLIAS and GARDEN STATE, which means it will be the type of movie we will hear buzzed about at festivals for months. Krasinski also will star in the lead as John Hollar, an aspiring NYC artist who takes his girlfriend (Kendrick) back to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s (Martindale) brain surgery. There he’s forced to navigate the crazy life he left behind as his dysfunctional family, high school pals, his father (Jenkins), and his over-eager ex flood back into his life ahead of the operation.
No word on who may play the over-eager ex, but I would be willing to wager Krasinski could convince his wife, Emily Blunt, to take on that part. Krasinski is definitely worth watching as an actor, even if BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN was lacking from a directorial standpoint. He has charisma and an everyman quality without the annoying factor that Zach Braff has. This may be an interesting project to keep an eye on.
John Krasinski will produce through his Sunday Night banner. Distribution is set but there is no release date as of yet for THE HOLLARS.
