It has become something of a routine for a movie that has a great opening weekend to get the lightening in a bottle treatment from the studio. Take this summer's NEIGHBORS; it only cost $18 million to produce and has since made $200 million worldwide. It doesn't take a mathematician to see why they would want to do that again; mo' money mo' sequels right?
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were on a panel at the Produced By conference in Los Angeles where Deadline reported Rogen saying "We are having a lot of discussions" about a possible sequel to Neighbors, but whether or not it’ll happen is still undetermined. The busy duo are hard at work completing THE INTERVIEW which opens this October, the untitled Christmas film with director Jonathan Levine and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and last but not least their R-rated animated film SAUSAGE PARTY.
I enjoyed NEIGHBORS probably more than I should have; I felt it was sometimes just a series of SNL sketches that thankfully didn’t run too long. I don’t think there needs to be a sequel, it’s a one off concept that paid off very well for everyone, and it’s time to move on.
Are you guys up for a NEIGHBORS sequel?
A Rose Byrne by any other name.
