When he’s not apologizing for the first season of The Newsroom, Aaron Sorkin can be a pretty great writer. THE SOCIAL NETWORK and A FEW GOOD MEN stand out for me as his best work away from television. Sony must have really liked his Oscar nominated adaptation of Michael Lewis' MONEYBALL because now Sorkin is in negotiations to adapt Lewis’ "Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt" for the studio.
Here’s the synopsis of the book (via Amazon):
Flash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post–financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. Working at different firms, they come to this realization separately; but after they discover one another, the flash boys band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading—source of the most intractable problems—will have no advantage whatsoever.
If I have learned anything over the years by watching movies, it's that financial drama is no longer just listening to your parents squabble or roommates make excuses; it can make for some great movie watching too. WALL STREET, BOILER ROOM, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, and the criminally overlooked ARBITRAGE are just a few must-see movies for anyone thinking about putting on a suit and playing the finance game. I'd love to see what Sorkin can bring to this one; I don't think Hollywood is done with Wall Street, not by a long shot.
Also, if you're wondering whatever happened to the Steve Jobs biopic Sorkin penned, the last we heard was that Danny Boyle was in talks to direct and Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to star; we will keep you posted on that project too.
