Emily Browning is adorable in the trailer for musical God Help The Girl

Not as many people are familiar with Scottish band Belle and Sebastian as they should be. Led by Stuart Murdoch, Belle and Sebastian have been releasing their distinct brand of indie pop for almost twenty years. In 2009, Murdoch released an album called GOD HELP THE GIRL which he envisioned as the soundtrack for a film he wanted to make. Now, five years and one crowdfunding campaign later, the movie is a reality.

Starring SUCKERPUNCH’s Emily Browning and GAME OF THRONES’ Hannah Murray, GOD HELP THE GIRL looks like a throwback to the musicals of the sixties and seventies. It fully evokes the mood and tone of the album. Directed by Stuart Murdoch, GOD HELP THE GIRL could be the sleeper hit of the fall.

Eve (Emily Browning) is a catastrophe—low on self-esteem but high on fantasy, especially when it comes to music. Over the course of one Glasgow summer, she meets two similarly rootless souls: posh Cass (Hannah Murray) and fastidious James (Olly Alexander), and together they decide there’s only one thing to do: form a pop group.

Now, musicals often get a bad rap when they go in the direction of ROCK OF AGES or MAMA MIA, but GOD HELP THE GIRL looks like it has found a good balance between being sweet, cinematic, and unlike most movies in theaters these days. Hopefully it finds the audience it deserves when it hits screens on September 5, 2014.
