Ang Lee’s last effort LIFE OF PI won him a Best Director Oscar, so you better believe he’s going to be picky about what he delivers next. I trust he’s found the right project as last week’s report about the possibility of Lee directing an adaptation of the Iraq War novel "Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk" has now been confirmed. This means he’s putting his 3D boxing movie that he’s been developing since last year aside for now and focusing on a satirical film instead. When it comes to the script for the film, he’s in good hands with SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE scribe Simon Beaufoy.
Here's the book synopsis from Amazon:
A razor-sharp satire set in Texas during America's war in Iraq, it explores the gaping national disconnect between the war at home and the war abroad. Ben Fountain’s remarkable debut novel follows the surviving members of the heroic Bravo Squad through one exhausting stop in their media-intensive "Victory Tour" at Texas Stadium, football mecca of the Dallas Cowboys, their fans, promoters, and cheerleaders.
I’ve enjoyed everything Ang Lee has done, one of my all-time favorites being THE ICE STORM (trailer below), which if you’ve never heard of, find and enjoy. He’s explored martial arts, romance, a comic book movie, and more; so I’ll be interested to see how he approaches this one.
