I don't mean to be crass, but what the f*ck is going on in Hollywood? In the last few months, we have not gone more than a week without hearing about another classic movie being turned into a television series. After the success of HANNIBAL, PARENTHOOD, BATES MOTEL, and ABOUT A BOY, we now have shows based on BIG, REAL GENIUS, RUSH HOUR, SUPERGIRL, X-MEN, MINORITY REPORT, SCREAM, EVIL DEAD, and countless others. NBC has already killed their proposed sequel series to Cameron Crowe's SAY ANYTHING, but your 80s memories are not safe.
Deadline reports that Will Packer is developing a sitcom based on John Hughes' UNCLE BUCK for ABC.
Like the movie, the series project, written by Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley, will center on a childish man, played in the film by Candy, who learns how to be an adult by taking care of his brother’s kids in a very childish way.
To say this is a bad idea would be too obvious, so I will just shake my head and wonder what the hell happened to originality? I know the old adage that every story has already been told, but this is a little ridiculous. UNCLE BUCK is not a Best Picture winner or Criterion Collection worthy, but it also doesn't need to be retold, especially over 23 episodes. This is an idea that just should go away, like that SAY ANYTHING series.
