Back to the Future will not be back in theaters but on the stage

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's not too often in the film community that fans can get excited over something NOT happening, but this is exactly one of those cases. Despite Universal Pictures hitting up creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale to sequelize/reboot the BACK TO THE FUTURE series, Mr. Gale recently spoke against the idea, assuring fans that this is something not in the cards. Oddly enough, a stage musical of the most entertaining time-traveling duo (bold claim, I know) is in the works.

Regarding the status of a BACK TO THE FUTURE remake/sequel:

Let’s face it, we’ve seen a lot of sequels that are made years and years later and I don’t think I can name one that’s any good. That lives up to the originals. I don’t think you can recapture it. We’re not going to do Director’s Cuts or make a 3D version or change the special effects. People love them the way they are, we think they’re really good. Let’s not mess with it.

When the world can expect the BACK TO THE FUTURE musical:

I don’t know when that’s going to be ready. It was announced to come out in 2015 – it won’t come out then. We’re not going to put it out there until we absolutely love it ourselves. We decided to do that, rather than reboot the movie, or do another sequel.

I can take or leave the stage musical (although they have to work in the two Huey Lewis and the News tracks), but it's refreshing to know some things will remain the way they should be . . . at least while Zemeckis and Gale are still kicking. Then again, I would have sworn that a STAR WARS sequel would never find its way into theaters before George Lucas was six feet under, but here we are, little more than a year away. The only question now is do I go with Alan Silvestri or Huey Lewis . . .

The BACK TO THE FUTURE sequel/reboot will hopefully NOT hit theaters ever.
