While THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy was an awards powerhouse, especially the final film RETURN OF THE KING, Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT has been critically underwhelming on the trophy circuit. Still, with THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES representing the last cinematic endeavor from Jackson and his crew, they are making a sentimental choice and bringing back a fan favorite to sing the closing song for the trilogy capper's end credits.

Billy Boyd, the actor who played Pippin in THE LORD OF THE RINGS, is returning to sing the final song for THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES. He will join Neil Finn and Ed Sheeran who sang songs for each of the first films as well as Annie Lennox and Enya who provided songs for THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Boyd sang the stirring song "Edge of Night" in RETURN OF THE KING during a powerful scene shared with John Noble.

For THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES, Boyd will sing "The Last Goodbye" which is an original composition he wrote along with film screenwriters Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. It seems a safe bet that the song will be nominated for Best Original Song but it is the inclusion of Boyd that should remind fans of the circular nature of THE HOBBIT as it leads up to the events of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

I am sure there will be a music video and big promotional push once the song is released and I am intrigued to see if it is as powerful as the songs that have come before it. THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES hits theaters on December 17th.
