Rumblings of a subscription service for movie theaters come and go, but it looks like a AMC is going to give it the old college try. Some of you may remember MoviePass, the subscription service that costs $30 a month and allows you to see any 2D movie once per day. As of now it's anything but user friendly, requiring their specific card, an Android or iPhone, and ruling out IMAX and 3D screenings. However, AMC is partnering up with MoviePass for a "pilot run" in hopes of changing that. If your recall the INTERSTELLAR initiative which allowed theater goers to pay a flat fee to see Christopher Nolan's latest as often as they want, so too will AMC offer a $30 and $45 monthly subscription for all movies, the latter of which will allow you to attend any 3D or IMAX screening. As of now the only restriction is one movie per day, but AMC will be testing this out starting next month in Boston and Denver.

While the length of this trial run isn't listed, it's hard to make an accurate assesment of your average schmoe's theater practices without following him or her over the course of the year. For example, I'm sure any and everyone would take advantage of a $45 subscription during the summer movie season, but what about when things slow down during the end of the year? Personally, I would abuse the hell out of that pass more than Legolas abuses gravity, but I imagine they're looking for folks who don't normally spend $30 or $45 a month. As always, we'll be sure to keep you updated if AMC's initiative moves to a city near you!

amc-theaters-audienceI am so confused by the people not wearing 3D glasses in this picture.  What are they seeing?!?
