2015 Lionsgate Preview!

Lionsgate had a decent year for 2014, despite dropping two spots to seventh place in the studio spread for the year, taking 7.1% of the market share with $736.9 Million in ticket sales. This year sees a smaller slate from the growing studio, which will continue it’s next YA franchise series to the sequel test with THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT, while closing out its cash cow, THE HUNGER GAMES. There’s potential franchise potential with Vin Diesel’s THE LAST WITCH HUNTER and some riskier fare such as the long-delayed CHILD 44, CRIMINAL, and the secretive project AMERICAN ULTRA. While not as explosive a line-up as last year, there’s still a few select choices among this list that may well be surprise hits.

American Ultra (TBD)

A stoner and his girlfriend’s sleepy, small-town existence is disrupted when his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a government operation set to wipe him out.

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Walton Goggins, Connie Britton, Topher Grace, John Leguizamo, and Bill Pullman. Written by Max Landis. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (November 20)

After being symbolized as the ‘Mockingjay’ Katniss Everdeen and District 13 engage in an all-out revolution against the autocratic Capitol.

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Natalie Dormer, and Gwendoline Christie. Directed by Francis Lawrence.

The Last Witch Hunter (October 23)

The last remaining witch hunter battles against an uprising of witches in modern day New York.

Starring: Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, and Elijah Wood. Directed by Breck Eisner.

Criminal (August 21)

The memories & skills of a deceased CIA agent are implanted into an unpredictable and dangerous convict.

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Alice Eve, Gal Gadot, Gary Oldman, Michael Pitt, Antje Traue, Tommy Lee Jones, Jordi Mollà, and Scott Adkins. Directed by Ariel Vromen.

The Age of Adaline (April 24)

After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

Starring: Blake Lively, Harrison Ford, Michiel Huisman, Amanda Crew, and Ellen Burstyn. Directed by Lee Toland Krieger.

Child 44 (April 17)

A disgraced member of the military police investigates a series of nasty child murders during the Stalin-era Soviet Union.

Starring: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman, Charles Dance, Jason Clarke, and Vincent Cassel. Directed by Daniel Espinosa.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent (March 20)

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

The DUFF (February 20)

Bianca is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as ‘The DUFF’ (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. Now, despite the words of caution from her favorite teacher, she puts aside the potential distraction of her crush, Toby, and enlists Wesley, a slick but charming jock, to help reinvent herself. To save her senior year from turning into a total disaster, Bianca must find the confidence to overthrow the school’s ruthless label maker Madison and remind everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s DUFF.

Mortdecai (January 23)

Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

Starring: Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn, Paul Bettany, and Jeff Goldblum. Directed by David Koepp.

Spare Parts (January 16)

Four Hispanic high school students form a robotics club under the leadership of their school’s newest teacher, Fredi. With no experience, 800 bucks, used car parts and a dream, this rag tag team goes up against the country’s reigning robotics champion, MIT. On their journey, they learn not only how to build a robot- they learn to build a bond that will last a lifetime.
