Christopher McDougall’s 2009 best-selling book, “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen” (I doubt the full title will be used) is about to be adapted for the big screen. It has been confirmed that Matthew McConaughey is set to star in the film based on a script from Matthew Michael Carnahan. If all those candid magazine images at my local grocery store of McConaughey running on beaches had any help in the casting decision, this sounds like a role destined for the Oscar-winning actor.
In the book, McDougall finds members of the Tarahumara Indian tribe in the Mexican Copper Canyons and discovers they’re able to run distances of more than 100 miles without getting the typical injuries that come along with running. The book then follows a race between America’s greatest runners and members of the tribe. It served an inspiration for the barefoot running movement.
Have we seen the last of McConaughey’s romantic comedies? Let's hope so. Not that there's anything wrong with a good rom-com now and then, the key word being good. His more serious roles are what brought him back into the limelight once again and I think it's safe to say that we’re all grateful.
Any runners out there ever run barefoot?
