Production on Oliver Stone’s upcoming Edward Snowden movie is starting next month and the director is hard at work filling out the remainder of the cast. If you’re familiar with the life of Snowden or have seen the great documentary CITIZENFOUR, then the new roles just cast should mean something to you. Melissa Leo is in talks to play Laura Poitras (the director of CITIZENFOUR), Zachary Quinto is up for the role of Glenn Greenwald, and Tom Wilkinson is in talks to play Ewen MacAskill.
The new cast members join Joseph Gordon-Levitt who was cast to play Snowden and Shailene Woodley who plays his girlfriend Lindsay Mills. The film will follow the NSA contractor who leaked classified documents and the key figures of his inner circle. The three roles mentioned above obviously play an important role in the events surrounding the leaks; they were present during when information began to be leaked and continued to be there when it all came public.
I’m a fan of Stone’s work and as interesting as this story already is, perhaps his passionate touch can elevate it even more to a great movie experience. I’m intrigued to see what he and the cast come up with on this still untitled work. We will be sure to keep you posted on this one. Written and directed by Stone, the script is based on the books "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man" by Luke Harding and "Time of the Octopus" by Anatoly Kucherena.
