Jada Pinkett Smith says she will not be back for season two of Gotham

With a drove of villains introduced on the series, GOTHAM may be losing their lone original creation. Jada Pinkett Smith, who plays Fish Mooney on the FOX series, has explained that her time is about up on the Batman prequel. In an interview with Extra (via TV Line), Smith reiterated that her single season contract will expire at the conclusion of the show’s debut run in a couple of months.

“We’re done, I did my year and I had a good time,” adding that Fish will go out with a bang. “The show is gonna [have] an awesome finale.”

The character of Fish Mooney is the only aspect of GOTHAM that does not have roots in a DC Comics creation. She has been a central focus for most of the season both in the Maroni/Falcone crime war and the development of Oswald Cobblepot from thug to crime lord. In recent episodes, Mooney has existed in an isolated story arc that involves Dr. Dulmacher (Colm Feore) and even saw the character prove her nature by gouging out her own eye.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s performance rubbed many the wrong way but I have enjoyed her over the top take on the character. Not being based on an existing character also made Fish Mooney the most unpredictable part of GOTHAM. With the series already locked in for a second run in the Fall, it remains to be seen if they will be killing Fish off or leaving a return open in later years.

GOTHAM airs Mondays on FOX.
