Joe and Anthony Russo & Channing Tatum developing an all-male Ghostbusters

Sony may not be afraid of no ghost, but they may be afraid of the Internet backlash against the all-female GHOSTBUSTERS reboot from Paul Feig, starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. That is the only explanation why they have now announced they will be making a new all-male GHOSTBUSTERS.

Deadline reports that the film will be the first in Sony's deal with Joe and Anthony Russo that we reported on last week. The GHOSTBUSTERS reboot will be developed under the guidance of Ghost Corps, a new sub-division at Sony helmed by Dan Akyroyd and Ivan Reitman. The movie will be scripted by IRON MAN 3's Drew Pearce and will have Channing Tatum on board as producer.

Sony apparently wants Tatum to also star in the film which could launch a new franchise concurrently with the all-female film. There is no word on how exactly the movies will cross-over but comments make it sound like they will be connected.  Ivan Reitman gave this statement about the new film and Ghost Corps.

“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Reitman told me. “This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following hear. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

While this is not the true GHOSTBUSTERS 3 we all hoped would star Bill Murray and the rest of the original crew, this could be the next best thing. No matter what Sony or those involved say, this does sound like a major lack of confidence in the all-female project. But, this could be the equivalent of Lucasfilm being sold to Disney. GHOSTBUSTERS may be on the brink of exploding! Get ready people!

GHOSTBUSTERS (the female one) hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
