New details have emerged about the Nicolas Winding Refn-directed horror flick THE NEON DEMON, courtesy of Dazed & Confused and What Culture.
We'll start with D&C, who last month spoke with Liv Corfixen, Refn's wife and MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN director. She says THE NEON DEMON is inspired by the tale of Countess Bathory, a 16th century serial killer who (as the story goes) would wash herself with the blood of virgins to maintain her youth. Corfixen thinks the film may be about Christianity, but she's not positive, although she says Refn has recently been buying Christian movies. The movie will apparently be set in L.A., and D&C described it as a mix between the 1993 survival drama ALIVE and 1999's DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.
Liv Corfixen also says Nicolas Winding Refn came up with the idea for THE NEON DEMON a while ago:
He has always wanted to do a horror movie. That was the same with Valhalla Rising (2009), a Viking movie. He has the idea about 10 years before he makes it, so I think it’s an idea he has had for many, many years. To do a film like that he thinks, ‘I need to do a Viking movie, or a horror movie, or this and that movie.’ He has to get it out of his system to move on to do another movie.
Meanwhile What Culture is reporting that the movie will be about “a group of supermodels going to extremes in their attempts to keep looking the way they do," like "voodoo and cannibalism."
Cannibal supermodels using voodoo to stay young? With Christina Hendricks more than likely playing one of them? All of this sounds absolutely fantastic to me. I know that Nicolas Winding Refn's movies aren't for everybody, but so far I have loved everything I've heard about THE NEON DEMON, and I can't wait to check out the first trailer.
Production on THE NEON DEMON is expected to start this spring.
