Video game films in-development are a dime a dozen, and while many studios “threaten” to turn gamers’ most beloved into feature films, very few actually follow through. The story of Michael Fassbender and ASSASSIN’S CREED is not a short one, with the original release date scheduled for August of this year. The date has been pushed back time and time again, making folks wonder whether or not this production would be a failed one. Well, for the time being, it looks like all systems are go. Fassbender recently spoke on the matter, revealing some tidbits about the story and, more importantly, a production start date.
Michael Fassbender regarding the delays in production on ASSASSIN’S CREED:
You say it’s a long time but what I’ve found–it’s all new to me but starting to develop scripts and work on them, they take time,” he countered to our mention of the delays in getting the movie made. “It just takes time to get a good story together and we really want to do it right. It’s exciting. It’s going to start this year, we’ll be filming in September.
Whether or not Fassbender will be playing Desmond Miles:
You don’t know that. Don’t listen to what they tell you, that’s the first rule.
Regarding franchise potential:
That’s always the challenge of something that’s so dense, to really find something and pare it down and basically, there are so many elements to it, so trying to translate that to an audience, you have to pick key things. So yes, that is part of it, getting through the density of it and paring down and engaging a simple story.
While I feel that Ubisoft over-saturated the market with Assassin’s Creed games, I still think it’s a pretty great concept for a film. None of us have had the chance to see director Justin Kurzel‘s work on MACBETH, so we don’t really have a good taste of how an ASSASSIN’S CREED film may turn out. Still, Fassbender’s faith and persistence is a breath of fresh air. Here’s hoping nothing gets in the way of that September start date.
ASSASSIN’S CREED starts shooting this September.
No, I will never get sick of this.
