Back in February, Hugh Jackman said he never wanted to stop playing Wolverine. Mainly, he was emphasizing how important the role was to him but he clearly knew the end of the line would come at some point. Then, in March, Jackman shared a photo indicating “one last time” as Wolverine. Since then, we have been wondering if he was serious or not. Now we know for sure that James Mangold‘s sequel to THE WOLVERINE will be Jackman’s final appearance on film as the character.
ComicBook.com has cited Jackman’s appearance on The Dr. Oz Show where he made this clear statement when asked about whether the THE WOLVERINE sequel will be his last film as Logan.
“This will be my last one. It is my last time. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”
From the way that sounds, THE WOLVERINE sequel may feature the death of Logan, a significant story arc in Marvel Comics. There was talk of including a re-cast Wolverine in Bryan Singer‘s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and we have yet to hear confirmation of Jackman’s involvement in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. That means we may only see him wield his adamantium one more time on the big screen after all.
The sequel to THE WOLVERINE is slated for release on March 3, 2017.
