EPISODE 5: Kill the Boy

THE PLOT : The long summer is at an end, winter truly is coming and with it the cold winds of war as five self proclaimed Kings claim dominance over Westeros, but there can be only one winner when you play the game of thrones.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode). I suppose it was greedy of me to think Sir Barristan and Grey Worm would both survive the Harpy attack, but I’m truly saddened to see Sir Barristan go. It would have been cool beyond measure to see him by Dany’s side when (assuming it happens) the battle reaches King’s Landing. That said, I was both overjoyed and rather perplexed by the series of events that unfolded as a result. The dragon feeding was fantastic, the fighting pit news welcome, but marriage? Got to say, I didn’t see that curveball coming. One thing is for certain, Missandei was right, Dany needs to make up her own damn mind for a change. Advice is always welcome, but a Queen should have her own agenda.

Jon Snow is making the Lord Commander gig look all kinds of not fun. I admire what he’s trying to do for the Wildlings, but it’s a moot point as far as The Watch is concerned. These guys have been fighting the Wildlings, well, forever, and they just fought one of the fiercest battles The Wall has ever seen, so suffice to say this may be a little too soon for peace talks. I get the ideology behind it (it’s nice to see the White Walker threat acknowledged), and I thoroughly enjoyed the Tormund conversation, but for Jon to just agree to take off with him to face the Wildling horde? Damn bro, if you think convincing your guys is rough, what do you think is going to happen when you show up to talk to the Wildlings after burning Mance? I hope you bring Ghost, cause I have a feeling you may need some muscle. Oh, and I don’t think I’d eat that plate of food the kid brought either (cough, cough, POISON, cough).

There’s trouble a brewing in Winterfell. Ramsey’s nuts, but his woman seems even worse. I almost thought she was considering feeding Sansa to her dogs, and what a moment when the two of them were gazing up at the tower Jaime pushed Bran from—talk about full circle. I loved the old lady’s S.O.S instructions, and rest assured, Sansa will be in trouble before too long. Theon’s presence is still hard to watch, but every time I look at him I hear Gandalf’s speech to Frodo about Gollum still having a part to play in things. I didn’t need the image of Roose Bolton impregnating his new wife in my head, but it was interesting to hear him preparing for Stannis. Equally awesome, was Stannis questioning Sam about the White Walkers. Here’s hoping that sometime this season we get a glimpse of what’s going on in the dark recesses of the North.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 5’s fifth episode turns up the heat, which I welcome, but at the same time, I hate that it took the midway point of the season to finally happen—I love this show, but all this building toward one, or two episodes of excitement isn’t enough to satisfy my hunger. The biggest turn of events came from Jorah and Tyrion. At first, I figured there’d just be some “oohing, and aahing” over the big dragon in the sky (something that was bound to spawn some interesting conversation), but I didn’t expect the Stone Men. What I don’t get, is why in hell Jorah went that way if he knew they were there? I mean, these guys are Westeros’ equivalent to the Walking Dead (aside from the White Walkers), so why take the risk? A couple weeks back some ass-hat wrote something about Greyscale in the Strikebacks, so the second I saw these guys I cringed. They did cure Stannis’ daughter, so at least there’s hope, but when it comes to this show, I don’t have high hopes for poor Jorah. Solid as hell episode.

SEX/NUDITY: Ramsey and kennel girl have some light fifty shades of grey sexy time, Grey Worm and Missandei make out, and we get to imagine what Roose Bolton’s wife looks like naked.

VIOLENCE: The dragons be hungry! I’ll never tire of seeing dragons burn, shred and devour the wicked…or anyone else for that matter. Other than that, we get some fighting with the stone men, and the promise of war to come.

MOST EPIC SCENE: Tyrion’s “there be dragons” face was pretty epic.
