The partnership between DreamWorks Animation and Netflix continues with their latest streaming series based on the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON franchise. Whereas the previous seasons of the Nickelodeon series were set after the first film, the new series Dragons: Race to the Edge is set about three and a half years after the second season and a year and a half before the events of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2. With the characters all teenagers, the new series can explore plot elements not yet tackled by the show.
The animation looks almost as good as the feature films and benefits greatly from having the voice talents of feature film actors Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, T.J. Miller, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Kristen Wiig and Jonah Hill do not return for the animated series.
In the new Netflix original series, Hiccup and Toothless lead the Dragon Riders as they soar beyond the borders of Berk and discover the mysterious Dragon eye — an ancient artifact filled with secrets that will lead them to new lands filled with undiscovered dragons. But the heroes find themselves pursued by marauding dragonhunters, who will stop at nothing to seize the power of the Dragon Eye.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 was an epic film that rivaled some live action fantasy movies. As far as Dreamworks goes, this is one of their better franchises with the small screen additions as worthy as the films. If you haven’t given these a shot, you may want to check them out at your next convenience.
Dragons: Race to the Edge debuts all first season episodes on Netflix beginning June 26th.
