After Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds is done with playing superheroes

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

You've got to love an actor who can geek out with the best of us but who also has the talent and charisma to pull off some great geek roles; Ryan Reynolds is one such actor, his deep love for Deadpool was a big part of what got DEADPOOL off the ground despite the character's mishandling in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. Reynolds has appeared in several superhero films over the years, the most notable being GREEN LANTERN in which he played Hal Jordan, but DEADPOOL may be the last superhero he's destined to play.

During a discussion with The Huffington Post about his new film SELF/LESS, Ryan Reynolds was asked whether or not he would be open to playing more superheroes in the future:

We all want to be Batman alone at home in our specifically-sewn Bat pajammies, but no, I have no desire to play any other superheroes after this, hopefully we'll get to do 'Deadpool' again. Given the fact that it's rated R, the fans have to show their support for it, and they have to come out and make it worthwhile for the studio to make another one, but that's it for me. I've punched that superhero card a few times now, and that's enough.

I certainly hope that DEADPOOL will be a success and that we'll get to see Reynolds return to the role because if ever there was a guy who deserved a quality superhero flick under his belt, it's him. I really wanted to like GREEN LANTERN, I really did, but the film just didn't work for me. Ryan Reynolds went on to compare his role in GREEN LANTERN to his role in DEADPOOL and addressed one of the hopefully many aspects in which DEADPOOL will reign supreme over GREEN LANTERN; that god-awful CG costume:

Playing Green Lantern was difficult in certain respects, and one of which was that there was no suit, there was no sort of identifiable Green Lantern suit, it was created in post-production by computer graphic artists, and one of the great pleasures of playing Deadpool was that when we were shooting we invited a lot of the Make-a-Wish kids on and they connect with the character because he's a guy who has cancer but he's a guy who has never let this cancer stop him and I think that it's fascinating to see that but it's also really amazing to see their faces when you walk in in that suit, there it is, it's tactile, it's something they can touch and grab.

It doesn't matter how many photos we get of Ryan Reynold's Deadpool costume, that thing is marvelous. I look forward to seeing it in action amidst what will hopefully be a crazy, bloody, and fantastic film when DEADPOOL drops on February 12, 2016. If you're heading to SDCC 2015, don't forget that Rob Liefeld will be hiding Deadpool sketches and that we'll be revealing the first clue as to where to find one of them on our Twitter.

Is it really time for Ryan Reynolds to leave superheroes behind, or is there a hero out there that you'd love to see him portray?
