Earlier this year we heard that Seth Grahame-Smith (DARK SHADOWS, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER) was set to pen the upcoming BEETLEJUICE 2, and at that time seemed content with the “less is more” approach to Michael Keaton showing up in much of the film’s runtime. Given that Keaton would be the major draw, I don’t really see that happening, but he’s not the only player to return. Director Tim Burton boasted about his love for the character of Lydia, portrayed by Winona Ryder, but now we have word from the woman herself that she’ll be in the sequel.
Winona Ryder on the status of BEETLEJUICE 2:
I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview — like it was very hush-hush top secret — and then he was doing press for BIG EYES and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re doing it and Winona’s gonna be in it.’
Talk for a BEETLEJUICE 2 heats up about every 6 months or so, so I’m not exactly holding my breath for this one. Still, Burton is in post-production for MISS PREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN which hits in March of next year. If he’s adamant on making BEETLEJUICE 2 happen, perhaps we’ll hear some official word soon.
