It is a damn shame that it took over two decades for Hollywood to finally recognize the talents of Bryan Cranston. Sure, he was critically praised for his role on Malcolm in the Middle but it was not until Breaking Bad and the Emmy glory that came with it that he started getting big roles in movies. After a small role in GODZILLA last year, Cranston is headlining a movie all his own and it looks like it could be an Oscar contender.
In TRUMBO, Cranston plays screenwriter Dalton Trumbo whose tumultuous career helped bring the injustices of the blacklisting of Communists in the 1940s and 1950s. Trumbo was already a larger than life personality in Hollywood but became a champion for the legal and civil rights of his friends and colleagues to believe in whatever they chose to.
Directed by Jay Roach, TRUMBO has a an all-star cast that includes Helen Mirren, Diane Lane, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K., Elle Fanning, and John Goodman. You can tell in the trailer that not only does Cranston get to stretch his dramatic skills but he also gets to be quite funny as well. I doubt that TRUMBO will ever be a top box office draw but I can almost guarantee that we will be hearing about it again come awards season. Can you imagine if the man who played Walter White were to get that much closer to an EGOT?
TRUMBO debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival in September with a wide release beginning November 6th.
