CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will be throwing every hero they can into the ring and placing many of them in conflict with one another, but the allegiance of one of Marvel's newest heroes is still unknown. Paul Bettany made his first appearance as Vision this summer in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON but will reprise the role in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. During a panel at the AsiaPop Comic-Con this past weekend, Bettany was asked how he prepared for the role and what we can expect from Vision in the upcoming Captain America film:
I was given comics. I also was looking to think about what could be edifying for me to learn. I took the opportunity—you see my character get born… something unlikely to ever happen to me again. He must be both omnipotent and yet totally naive at the same time. And experiencing the world in real time and his place in it. Is he going to be a force of good or a force of evil? It was really interesting, fun to play with, because he’s dangerous, you don’t know if he’s going to go one way or another. I’m continuing that theme in Captain America 3.
While I seriously doubt that Marvel will take Vision down the latter road, I like that his character will remain relatively ambiguous, at least for the time being. As with much of the talent involved in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, Paul Bettany is signed on for multiple appearances but wouldn't reveal an exact number joking that he was worried about seeing a red dot on his shirt as "Marvel agents everywhere." Bettany did say that this was "the first time in my life that I’ve had the security of knowing that I’ve got a couple of movies to make."
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens on May 6, 2016.
