It's been a busy couple of weeks for Lionsgate's POWER RANGERS movie, with the project finding four of its five Rangers in the form of Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin and RJ Cyler, and now Collider has some interesting new details on the upcoming film from PROJECT ALMANAC director Dean Israelite.
Apparently POWER RANGERS won't feature original Mighty Morphin' series Rangers such as Jason Lee Scott and Kimberly Ann Hart as previously reported, and will instead focus on a brand new team: Callum Oliver – The Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus (Montgomery), Priya Patel – The Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl (Scott), Brian Olson – The Blue Ranger/Triceratops (Cyler), Oscar Fernandez – The Black Ranger/Mastodon (Lin), and Teyana Jones – The Yellow Ranger/Sabre-tooth Tiger. So while the colors and Zords will remain the same, Montgomery, Scott and company won't be playing the Rangers characters from the original series.
The site is also claiming that the official title is now SABAN'S POWER RANGERS. Series co-creator Haim Saban has reportedly been tweaking Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz's original script with Israelite (and are more than likely the ones who changed the characters' names), and he wants his name attached to the film.
Collider goes on to say the budget will be around $35 million, which isn't really that much higher than the price tag for the 1995 feature film ($15 million), and to me seems really low. Not saying the movie needs a $100 million budget, but I was definitely expecting it to be more in the $45-60 million range. What are your thoughts on these rumored POWER RANGERS details?
POWER RANGERS is due in theaters on January 13, 2017.
